Listing Photo Lab

Listing photos for eBay sellers

The photos are the product page

A buyer can't pick the item up. Every question your photos don't answer can become a message, a lowball offer or a sale that never happens.

Listing Photo Lab is a free guide to photographing used items for eBay listings, published by the team behind FlowLister. It covers what to shoot, eBay's photo rules checked against eBay's own pages (last checked October 2, 2026), lighting with a window and a piece of card, clothing, shoes, flaws, and shooting a whole batch in one sitting.

Photos aren't decoration on a listing. They are the listing. A buyer can't pick the item up, so everything they learn has to come from a photo, and anything you leave out they may assume the worst about.

What changes listing photos most?

Four habits change listing photos most: window light with white card, a complete shot set in a fixed order, flaws photographed on purpose, and eBay's rules, from eBay.

  • Light from a window, bounced with white card. It needs no kit and gives the soft, even light a softbox is built to make. How to set it up.
  • A complete shot set, in a fixed order. A rule of thumb is eight to twelve photos, each answering a question. The checklist.
  • Flaws photographed on purpose. A shown flaw closes the question. A hidden one invites a return. How to shoot them.
  • eBay's rules, from eBay. 500 pixels minimum, about 1600 x 1600 recommended, 24 photos free. Every rule, linked to its eBay page.
How do I take good photos for online listings?
Use soft light from a window with white card on the shadow side, shoot a fixed set of photos that answers every question a buyer would ask (a rule of thumb is eight to twelve), and keep the setup the same between items so your listings match.
What equipment do I need for listing photos?
A recent phone, a window, a plain background, a white bounce card and a tripod. A rule of thumb: better light improves results more than a better camera does.
What are eBay's photo requirements?
At least one photo, 500 pixels or more on the longest side, and about 1600 x 1600 recommended. Up to 24 photos free, 12MB each. No added borders, text or watermarks, and no stock photos of used items. Checked against eBay's pages on October 2, 2026.
Do better photos help listings sell?
eBay says they can. Its help page says quality item images can help boost sales, prevent returns and improve placement in search results, and its picture policy calls photos one of the most important parts of a listing, because they show the item's exact condition. Coverage matters more than count: every photo should answer a specific question.

Disclosure The people who build FlowLister run Listing Photo Lab. FlowLister is AI eBay listing software that turns item photos into complete eBay listings. Because it works from photos, a clear photo helps it and a blurry one doesn't. That's our interest in better photos. It's AI, so it misses things. Nothing here needs our tool.
